- Place your Elkhorn Fern in a location with bright, indirect sunlight. Direct sunlight can scorch its delicate leaves, so filtered light is ideal. Elkhorn Fern thrives in temperatures ranging from 60°F to 75°F (15.5°C to 24°C). Protect the plant from frost and cold drafts, bringing it indoors if nighttime temperatures drop below 50°F (10°C).
- Water the fern sparingly, allowing the soil to partially dry out between waterings. Overwatering can lead to root rot. In a pot, water every 9 days approximately, adjusting based on your environment. Maintain high humidity levels, ideally between 60% and 80%. Regular misting or placing a tray of water near the plant can help increase humidity. Avoid placing the plant near heating or cooling vents as they can dry out the air around it.
- Use a well-draining soil mix, such as a combination of orchid bark, peat moss, and perlite. Ensure the soil remains slightly acidic, with a pH level between 5.5 and 6.5. One of the best ways to showcase the Elkhorn Fern is by mounting it on a wooden board. Mix peat moss and sphagnum moss, place it on the board, and tie the fern using garden ties or stockings. Mist the plant regularly to keep the moss moist.
